September Dinner: “Getting out of the Slush Pile”

Cory Skerry, first reader for Tor.com, talks about how you can move your work out of the slush pile and onto an editors desk.

For the Whatcom Writers & Publisher’s September Dinner and Speaker event (Wednesday, Sept. 19th 5:30-8:30) our guest of honor will be Cory Skerry, first reader for Tor.com and Shimmer magazine. First readers are the gatekeepers. They decide whether your work will go up the chain to the editor. He will share a few of the things he is looking for in a short fiction piece, and how he decides what gets out of the slush pile and what doesn’t. If you have ever submitted your work to a magazine or editor you will find this topic invaluable.

Our dinner meeting will be extra special this month.  We will be kicking off the new 2012-2013 season with a social hour before dinner.  The doors will open at the special early time of 5:30pm and we will have appetizers, soda and tea available for all guests and special discount beer & wine coupons available for WWP members who have made Paypal reservations. As usual we will be at the Windows on the Bay in the Bellingham Yacht Club.

On the subject of Paypal, I just wanted to say that the response to our new Paypal reservation system, and how quickly everyone has adapted to it, has been really great.  It’s so much better for the volunteers who handle the transactions and for our finances.  Thanks everyone.  See you at dinner!
